OUR MISSION

Ani Shlishi is a nonprofit organization based in Tel Aviv, that uses second-hand clothing stores as a medium of providing opportunities of self-advancement to Israel’s youth at risk.

Ani Shlishi’s store operates much like an alternative school, serving youth whose needs have not been addressed by the public education system.

Hiring at-risk youth as salespeople, Ani Shlishi guides participants through a process of experiential learning and skill acquisition involving retail sales and management, leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving. After working at the store, participants earn the opportunity to learn a trade, funded in full through sales from our stores.

Ani Shlishi’s stores operate much like an alternative school, serving young people who have a strong desire to work but have been unable to find jobs because of their past issues. The Ani Shlishi model builds self-esteem through encouragement and accountability, providing positive role models and teaching practical skills while facilitating successful reintegration into the Israeli workforce.

Building Self Esteem

Participants also receive mentorship and guidance on handling their finances; this is often the first time they have their own money to spend. At the end of their rotation each participant may begin a certificate course in a vocation of their choosing.

Successful Mentoring

During this process participants are provided with valuable—and marketable—workplace and leadership skills, tools that enrich them personally and empower them to create change in their communities. As participants learn the many aspects of store operations, their responsibilities are steadily increased as they take on management duties. They are tasked with training newer participants, coordinating donation pickups and ensuring that the store runs smoothly.
